The vastly experienced and successful Evans replaced Adam Murray, who left the club on Monday.

Evans admitted he had been courted by other clubs from higher divisions but said it was chairman John Radford and his ambition that sold the club to him.

Evans, last at work at Leeds United last season, arrived with his usual No.2 Paul Raynor and can’t wait to get started as he chases an eyecatching 10th career promotion.

He will meet the players for the first time tomorrow, having introduced himself to a few today who were in for treatment.

Then he will begin work on a plan to beat his former club Crawley Town at One Call Stadium on Saturday.

Evans has been given a two and a half year deal.

Chairman John Radford said: “Steve’s résumé is amongst the best in the English Football League and his appointment underlines the club’s high ambitions.

Chief executive officer Carolyn Radford added: “Steve’s passion for both football and success is infectious and we are looking forward to working with him.

“His proven record of achieving silverware made Steve the outstanding candidate to lead the club into a new era.”
