New management team for AFC Mansfield

Northern Counties East League new boys AFC Mansfield this week unveiled their new management team with Dean Short named manager and Dean Mitchell his assistant.

And the pair made a winning start with a 4-1 victory in Saturday’s FA Vase tie at Holbrook Sports.

Short said: “It didn’t work out for me at Rainworth earlier in the season for a number of reasons, but I am delighted to be given this massive opportunity to take AFC Mansfield forward and I am going to do my best to do that.

“Micky Taylor has assembled a very good squad here and it’s up to me and Dean Mitchell to take it to the next level.

“I have played against a lot of the players here and managed a few of them. I don’t think there is a player here I didn’t know and that’s nice.

“I had a few texts from them saying welcome to AFC Mansfield. With three or four new signings I think we can kick on from here and start picking up some results.”

Short started playing at Abacus FC in the Notts Alliance and, after being watched by Forest and Doncaster, moved to Goole Town of the Unibond Premier League.

He then signed for Ashfield United, formerly Sutton Town, in the Northern Counties East Premier Division followed by a move to Unibond Premier Division Alfreton Town.

Short then returned and spent nine good years at Sutton Town before spells with Clipstone MW, Shirebrook Town and Teversal.

He eventually moved into management at Sutton Town AFC, taking them from bottom of the Central Midlands League South Division to winning the league after a season in charge and also reaching the Notts Senior Cup Final and the last 32 of the FA Vase.

Last season they finished in the top five in the East Midlands Counties League and also reached the League Cup final, but the Snipes unfortunately folded at the end of the season.

Short then moved to Rainworth MW as assistant manager to Scott Rickards, but within weeks Rickards resigned and Short took on a caretaker manager role until a permanent replacement could be found.

Assistant Dean Mitchell began his playing career at Nottingham Forest and was there from 1990 until 1998. He then moved to Mansfield Town and was there until 2001.

A move into non-League football followed with spells at Ilkeston Town, Retford United and Sutton Town.

Mitchell then took up coaching and ran Barnsley FC Development Centres for three years. He has also coached at Notts County, Leicester City and Stoke City.
