Morecambe boss Jim Bentley can't believe his side failed to net two penalties in defeat to Mansfield Town

Morecambe boss Jim Bentley could not believe his side had failed to score from two penalty kicks and lost 2-1 at Mansfield Town yesterday.

Kevin Ellison had fired Morecambe ahead after just 58 seconds, but Matty Blair and Krystian Pearce turned the game on its head before Scott Shearer made penalty saves in each half to preserve the points.

“We have had plenty of penalties this season and to be fair we have done all right with Mullin and Miller, who have usually dispatched them,” said Bentley.

“But if you can’t put it away from the penalty spot on two occasions - that’s the type of thing we are up against at the minute.

“We are in a sticky spell at the minute, but we didn’t deserve to lose.

“It’s frustrating. We wanted a little bit of revenge and got a good start. We also had a goal disallowed for offside which we are being told looked onside.

“It’s Ellison again who probably has had six or seven goals ruled out for offside this season.

“But the be all and end all is if you can’t pick your man up for a set play (Mansfield’s second goal) he puts it in the net.

“You can practise but when the players go over that white line what can you do? It has been our Achille’s heel this season allowing people to get across our markers and put the ball in the back of the net. We have got to be stronger in the middle.”
