Chris Millington’s era at Shirebrook Town got off to a winning start in the NCEL Division One.

There were ten new faces in the Shirebrook side from the team that finished last season - the constant being Adam Shepherd - at Penistone Church on Saturday.

The home side had the better of the opening 20 minutes with Shirebrook’s new goalkeeper Nick Siddons called into action make stops a handful of times.

But then the visitors started to test Siddons’ opposite number, with Matty Ord, Jamie Smith and Lee Whittington all going close to breaking the deadlock.

And it wass Whittington who got the first goal on 36 minutes when his free-kick was deflected off the Penistone wall and left the home goalkeeper stranded.

Shirebrook kept the pressure on and got there reward a minute from half time when Ord’s in-swinging cross found Tom Roebuck, who rose to meet the ball.

He sent a looping header that was too much for the home keeper and it landed in the bottom corner to give the visitors a comfortable lead at the break.

The second half was only two minutes old when Penistone were handed a way back into the game after Robley had brought down the hosts’ number ten in the box.

The refree pointed to the spot and gave Robley a yellow card for the foul. Lewis Dickinson stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way to get the home side back in the game.

But it was the away side who looked most dangerous of getting the next goal with Whittington and sub Mawbey both going close to extending the visitors’ lead.

The home side did throw everything at the visitors in the last five minutes but it came to nothing and allowed the visitors to see out the game with a 2-1 win.

Shirebrook returned to action on Tuesday night (August 11) as they hosted Dronfield Town at home in the NCEL League Cup Round One (7.45pm kick off).
