MEMORY MATCH: Time for Mansfield Town to end poor run against Crewe Alexandra

Saturday's visitors Crewe Alexandra have been something of a jinx team for the Stags in recent years.

Mansfield have only won two of the club's last 15 meetings and, memorably lost four times to them in league and cup clashes in 2002/03 without scoring a single goal.

The sides have drawn 1-1 twice this season so far, once in League Two action at Gresty Road and once at the One Call Stadium in Leasing.com Trophy action.

This week's Memory Match takes us back to 31st March 1992 when Stags won a thriller 4-3 at Field Mill to complete a double over the Railwaymen.

Phil Stant bagged a brace and Steve Wilkinson and Chris Fairclough goals sent the majority of a 3,113 crowd home happy as Mansfield stayed on course for promotion.

Stags had been looking very good but by that March had started to suffer the promotion wobbles.

Manager George Foster tried to bolster his troops by signing Nicky Clarke and Paul McLoughlin and, when results continued to be erratic he also spent £25,000 on Kevin Noteman on transfer deadline day.

However, it failed to spark the side and they picked up just one points from their next three games, two of them at home.

So the win over Crewe was much-needed as Stags picked up three wins in four games, losing at Blackpool before nervous wins over Carlisle and Halifax.

When they could only draw 0-0 at Maidstone United in their penultimate game, Stags had to beat Rochdale at home in the final game and rely on results elsewhere.

On a day that will long live in fans' memories, they edged a 2-1 win and fans around the stadium had ears glued to radios to hear the other games go their way and promotion was clinched.

Mansfield's 1-1 draw at Crewe on 14th December was an excellent away point for the Stags under most circumstances.

But, having only taken 22 points from the first 21 games of the campaign it was an afternoon when manager John Dempster was relieved of his duties.

Chuma Anena had given Crewe an early lead only to see Stags hit back through Andy Cook's inch-perfect lob on 27 minutes.

Crewe's last visit to Mansfield saw the Stags let more precious promotion points slip through their fingers as the Railwaymen won 2-1 almost a year ago on 23rd March.

The result saw the Stags drop out of the top three, three points behind MK Dons with seven games to go after being shot down by a 13-minute brace from Crewe sub Callum Ainley.

Down the years Stags have won 21 of their 40 home games with Crewe, losing 10 and drawing nine.
