MEMORY MATCH: Neil Whatmore goal shoots down Newport County for newly-promoted Mansfield Town

Despite last season's play-offs defeat by Newport County, Mansfield Town have always had a great record against the Welsh club down the years.

Despite that penalties defeat in May last year, Stags have only lost once to Newport over 90 minutes in their last nine clashes.

Michael Flynn's men went on to lose the play-off final 1-0 in extra-time to Tranmere Rovers, having had skipper Mark O’Brien sent off on 89 minutes.

Ahead of the Exiles' visit to the One Call Stadium on Saturday, this week's Memory Match takes us back to Tuesday, 25th November 1986 when the old version of the Welsh club was almost at an end.

Neil Whatmore's goal in front of 2,321 people proved enough for a 1-0 home win at Field Mill to extend newly-promoted Stags' unbeaten run to 14 games after having lost their opening game on their return to Division Three.

The season did peter out into a 10th placed finish eventually, but they did end it with silverware after that Wembley win over Bristol City in the Freight Rover Trophy final.

Stags also won 3-0 away at Newport that season as the Welsh club were relegated.

A year later Newport finished bottom of Division Four and their 60-year stay in the Football League was over. By February 1989 they were out of business.

Over that time the Welsh club had only ever won once at Field Mill – a 2-0 success in January 1939. Otherwise, Stags had won six and drawn two of their other eight clashes there.

Since their return to action in June 1989, Mansfield's home record against them has also been excellent.

Before the 0-0 play-off stalemate, Stags had won six in a row and their only defeat in 11 home clashes with the reformed club was a 4-3 home loss in August 2012.

The sides clashed in an extraordinary opening match in Wales this season when Stags fought back from 2-0 down for a 2-2 draw with goals by Krystian Pearce and Danny Rose.

But Mansfield could have won it, Nicky Maynard missing a penalty in a game in which Jacob Mellis was sent off.
