Mansfield Town's record against Leicester City, Sheffield Wednesday and other new League One opponents

Mansfield Town will face seven new opponents in League One next season.

All places on next year's League One roster have now been claimed after Notts County secured their promotion through the League Two play-offs. The Magpies comfortably beat Salford City 3-0 at Wembley to return to the third tier after an 11-year spell away.

Stags will face their local rivals for the first time since the 2023/24 season, when the two last shared a league. Nigel Clough’s side picked up six points from the Pies to aid their own promotion journey after finishing third in the League Two table.

Joining Notts County up from the fourth tier are Cambridge United, MK Dons and champions Bromley. Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday, Leicester City and Oxford United will head down from the Championship following their relegation.

There are some exciting new clashes coming up for Stags this season, so let’s take a look at their competitive history against all seven new opponents. All stats gathered via 11v11.

Bromley

Stags will be introduced to a completely new match-up when they face League Two winners Bromley. As the two have never met before, there’s plenty of room to speculate over how the fixtures will unfold.

Mansfield last faced Cambridge as recently as 2025, during their relegation season from League One. Stags won the first fixture 2-1 but lost 3-2 in the second, before the U’s were relegated. Cambridge have bounced straight back up and will be looking to balance out their H2H record with Stags.

Over the years, these two sides have played each other on 39 occasions, and met for the first time back in 1972. Mansfield edge the statistics with 15 wins to Cambridge’s 12.

Leicester City

From Premier League champions to League One contenders – Leicester City’s tale over the last ten years is certainly a fascinating one.

The Foxes finished 23rd in the Championship and have been relegated to the third tier for just the second time in their 142-year history.

Leicester have played Stags a handful of times over the years, and only once in the 21st century. Their story starts way back in 1892 but only stretches as recently as 2002. Out of the 10 match-ups between these two sides, Leicester have won eight times, and Mansfield just twice.

MK Dons

Another brief history with Mansfield Town is MK Dons. Out of eight meetings, Stags have both won and drawn twice, with the Buckinghamshire side taking the other four results as their own. The two last met during the 2023/24 season, which ended with Stags moving up out of League Two.

The first match in 2024 ended in Dons’ favour but Stags went on to enjoy a 4-1 win on the road, thanks to goals from Elliott Hewitt, James Gale and a Davis Keillor-Dunn brace.

Notts County

The Nottinghamshire Derby will return this coming season as Notts County make their League One return. The two sides have a stacked history, tracing back to 1937. Out of the 56 times they have met, Mansfield Town have won on 22 occasions and the Magpies 19.

Stags earned a six-pointer over the Pies during the 2023/24 season, when the two last faced each other. Throughout the two games, Stags scored five goals, with four coming during their last visit to Meadow Lane. Louis Reed, Baily Cargill, Aden Flint and Lucas Akins all got on the scoresheet.

Oxford United

Oxford’s stay in the Championship has come to an end after two years and they will return to League One next season. The U’s have played Mansfield Town 32 times and are the most successful of the two with 14 wins to Stags’ 12.

These two sides haven’t faced each other since the 2015/16 season, when both fixtures in League Two ended in draws.

Sheffield Wednesday

Stags have a sporadic history with Sheffield Wednesday, having only faced them on 16 occasions across a 77-year period.

The two first met in a 0-0 draw in the 1946 FA Cup, and the replay ended in a 5-0 win for the Owls. After that, it was more than 20 years before they played each other again.

Stags have beat Wednesday five times, drawn five and lost six. In 2023, they earned their first victory over the Yorkshire side since 1979 – a successful penalty shootout during the second round of the Carabao Cup.
