MARK Hemingray’s youth team continued their charge on the Football Conference Youth Alliance North Division title, as they saw off bottom-placed Stalybridge Celtic 3-1, writes Craig Priest.
The young Stags started in lively fashion and eventually broke the resilience on the half hour mark.
Jordan Jones provided the assist after beating his man with pace on the right hand side. Matt Harris did the rest, squeezing the former’s driven low cross beyond the home goalkeeper from close range.
Despite plenty of possession, the next goal didn’t arrive until the hour mark. Dean Robinson’s throw found Jason Gregory in the middle, with the young centre-half putting in a testing cross which put the home defence on the back foot. Matt Harris was first to react, leaping high above his marker to head the ball dominantly beyond the keeper for his second of the afternoon.
Ten minutes later the struggling hosts, who we’re league champions last season, found a glimmer of hope as a driven effort from 20 yards took a deflection off Scott Rogers and beyond Ryan Hopkins.
The two goal cushion was restored on 75 minutes, with leading scorer Adam Somes coming off the bench to grab his 20th strike of the season to wrap the game up.
