Murray also praised the Stags’ supporters for their understanding, as the club prepare to go up against some big-hitters over the next nine months.

Murray said: “I’ve been here a long time now and I think it’s the best atmosphere I’ve felt.

“That’s not because we’ve been brilliant in pre-season and everybody’s going ‘we’re going to win the league by 28 points.’

People are looking at it now with a realistic view and knowing we’ve put a decent squad together.

“We’ve performed okay in pre-season but people are understanding that this is a tough league.

“There’s a real optimism but also balance with the realism this season.

“I don’t think we’re getting carried away with anything but we’re positive.

“I think we’re strong as a club: You look at the fans in pre-season and there’s a sensible view on things.

“People aren’t away with the fairies.

“They are saying we could have a good season but we understand what the league entails and who’s in it.

“I want people to look at us and go ‘this is Mansfield Town and this is what they stand for.’

“As long as we stay on that path, we’ll be fine.”
