Mansfield Town did former club stalwart Bobby Hassell proud for his Barnsley Testimonial game on Saturday as they played their part in an exciting game that ended in a 4-3 win for the League One Tykes at Oakwell.

At the same time, boss Adam Murray sent coach Micky Moore and a young side to Solihull Moors to fulfil the other pre-season friendly already scheduled, Mansfield losing that game 3-0.

Hassell opened the scoring on his big day after only seven minutes as he beat Scott Shearer from the spot after Nathan Thomas had conceded a penalty.

But two minutes later Matt Green beat the offside trap to run through and notch his first goal of his second spell with the club.

On the half-hour, Nathan Thomas picked out Reggie Lambe to put Mansfield in front.

However, the scores were all square again by the break after home trialist David Ball had lobbed Shearer to level.

Stags made two changes at the break and a further six on the hour after which the Tykes went 3-2 up through Joe Rothwell.

As the 70th minute came round, the full XI for the Tykes were withdrawn in favour of a team of ex-Barnsley players who were team mates of Hassell’s throughout his career.

Daniel Nardiello headed a fourth for Barnsley, but Mansfield were not done and within two minutes Craig Westcarr bagged a fine solo effort.

Mansfield Town: Shearer, Hunt (Shires, 66), Tafazolli, Collins (Fitzpatrick, 66), Benning (C. Green, 62), Chapman (McGuire, 62), Clements, Rose (J.Thomas, 45), N.Thomas (Westcarr, 45), Lambe (Dwyer, 66), M. Green (Beardsley, 62).

Hassell had seven seasons with the Stags between 1997 and 2004 before moving on to Barnsley where he had 10 season, mostly in the Championship.

In December 2014 Hassell then began an Indian adventure as he signed for new I-League team Bharat FC.

Mansfield now turn their attentions to their two home pre-season friendlies with MK Dons tomorrow night and Leicester City on Saturday.
