STAGS RETRO: Mansfield Town overcome Lincoln City 4-0 back in 1944

72 years ago today the Stags smashed four goals past Lincoln City without reply.

This was a victory that did not flatter the Stags.

Despite the hosts hitting four goals, Lincoln’s ‘keeper put in a good performance especially considering he was second choice.

However, Mansfield’s quality told in the end although they only had one goal to show for it at half-time.

Barke smashed a penalty home for the Stags.

Mansfield’s youthful wingers Gascoigne and Owens impressed after the restart with the latter notching the second goal just before the hour.

Tapping put away Town’s third before the fourth came from the boot of Owens once more.

Supporter Jon O’Neill says the match, played during World War Two, was the first match his father ever went to.
