The best win of the season; the fourth double of the season; the first hat-trick by a Mansfield player for five years - almost to the day - and a couple of goals from Duncan McKenzie in his first full senior outing.
All this happened in yesterday week’s 5-0 trouncing of Southport, who were beaten 1-0 in a near gale at home by Stags way back on 8th November.
And how the fans loved it. They cheered Dudley Roberts’ hat-trick to the echo Saluted McKenzie with a prolonged chant; gave the team a standing ovation at half time and a repeat at the end.
Roberts grabbed the hat trick in an 18-minute spell in the first half. He opened the scoring after 10 minutes turning in a cross from Sandy Pate. Three minutes later he dived to head in a Goodfellow corner helped on by Partridge. And after 28 minutes he pounced in a flash on a bad back pass by Malcolm Russell to steer the ball into the net as goalkeeper John Armstrong raced off his line.
To keep the excitement going, Jim Goodfellow missed a penalty in the 20th minute after Jones had jinked by three defenders and been hacked down by another.
McKenzie got into the act a minute before the break scoring with a shot from a pass by Partridge.
Then Roberts crossed for the ex-Forest youngster to hit the crossbar and slam the rebound into the net after 61 minutes.
The second half, perhaps naturally never lived up to the excitement of the first, Stags were too far in front for that. And Southport on odd occasions showed they could be pretty useful up front - if allowed. But Brown was rarely troubled although he made a couple of fine saves from the visitors’ most dangerous forward Roy McCarthy.
A fine performance by Town, and a clear indication that Easter Monday’s defeat at Reading had left no ill-effects.
Footnote:-- Bill Curry scored the last hat-trick for Stags on 5th April 1965 when he scored four against Southend United at Field Mill.
