STAGS boss Paul Cox hailed a ‘thoroughly professional performance’ from his side in today’s impressive 3-0 away win at neighbours Alfreton Town.
Cox had demanded a response after Alfreton won 2-1 at the One Call Stadium on Boxing Day and got exactly that with a one-way traffic second half showing and a clean sheet.
“That was a thoroughly professional performance from the boys today at a very hard place to go and get a result,” said Cox.
“We defended well, kept out shape and looked sharp. And I though Daniel, Green and Meikle looked a constant threat up front.
“Credit to the players, it was New Year’s Eve last night and one or two could have been unprofessional. But they obviously all looked after themselves and were very professional.
“This was a big game for us to win and I am not naïve enough not to think some might have an eye on the Liverpool game.
“ The first half was quite even. But in the second half I thought we could have probably scored seven or eight, we were so dominant.
“A move near the end saw about 10 passes and, if it had gone in, it might have been goal of the season.”
Now the January transfer window is open, Cox said he hoped to bring new faces in.
“I think our squad needs strengthening if we are going to be competitive near the top of this league with the schedule of games we have coming up,” he said.
“We need more strength in depth to cope with injuries, suspension and loss of form.”
