Rodney out to revive career on Stags loan

IF NIALLE Rodney can hit the sort of from Mansfield Town boss Paul Cox knows him to be capable of, he expects the Bradford striker’s loan at Field Mill to be a short one.

“If he does get himself back on track then I don’t think we will be able to keep hold of him very long as he is a very very good player,” said Cox.

“Nialle has everything in his armoury to play at a higher level than this. His career needs a bit of a jolt right now and think he is one of those players that needs a bit of loving.”

“I have kept my eye on Nialle for a while now. He was at Forest since he was a kid and I was very surprised when he became available.

“He shot to the stars very quickly at Forest and made a few mistakes. Knowing his history, it is very easy as a young player in that position to forget your love of the game and lose your way.

“He is very quick – he can catch pigeons -and will make Matt Green look slow. He will take a bit of pressure off Matt. I think he is in the mould of Marlon Harewood.”

Rodney, who is with Stags for an initial month, said: “I am here for games, goals and minutes under my belt.

“I moved up to Leeds so it’s nice to be back down here and see my family a bit more.

“Being a local lad I have always looked out for Mansfield’s scores.

“I was disappointed and surprised to leave Forest. I had to get my head round that and get on with it. I was upset by their decision but I know my ability and have confidence in myself.

“I did really well for Bradford in pre-season, then unfortunately I got injured and a new manager came in. This season I went on loan to Darlington and the manager got sacked straight away. It didn’t go as well as I’d hoped, so it was back to Bradford.

“I was very glad to get the chance to come to Mansfield. I want to be playing football week in, week out.

“I knew of Paul Cox and my agent spoke very highly of him. I also knew a few of the lads here like Keiron Freeman and Lindon Meikle.

“I haven’t seen any Mansfield games this season but I will be watching a few on DVD. I know Matt Green has done well since he came here and I hope I can play alongside him and score a lot of goals too.”
