Rare clean bill of health for Mansfield Town for Luton clash

Mansfield Town go into tomorrow’s tough League Two clash at Luton Town with a very rare full clean bill of health.

It is hard to recall a time when the physio’s room was empty at the One Call Stadium and Murray put it down to the careful preparation from pre-season onwards that has come to fruition.

“It’s early doors, but to come through pre-season where you do pick up a lot of muscular injuries, we’ve done superbly well and that’s credit to the staff,” he said. “It’s nothing to do with myself.

“The physios spend a lot of time on pre-hab and strength and conditioning work to limit the risk.

“You can’t cut injuries out of football – it’s the nature of the beast. But what you can do is try to measure the risk and control that as much as you can.

“We do put a lot of time into that. We’ve only got a little squad so we have to be careful of every little thing we do. Training is monitored and workloads are monitored to make sure we limit every opportunity of there being a risk and so far it’s gone okay.”

He added: “The amount of injuries we’ve had over the last few years had been a problem. Whether that was down to previous regimes, I don’t know. But we’ve got our way we believe in and we feel is right.

“I cover every little detail as much as I can and I make sure the staff are like that as well. With things like that it’s about weighing up the risks that every opportunity carries from training sessions, to warm-ups to cool downs, to games, to the type of practice you do, and at the time that you do it.

“I think if you cover all bases and you make sure everything is analysed you give yourself a chance.”

Murray admitted the next step he would like to take it to attach ‘sat-navs’ to his players in-game to monitor their every move.

“There is still more from my point of view that I’d love to do,” he said.

“I read in the paper about Wycombe having GPS systems for the games and training and that’s something we haven’t got at the minute.

“Obviously that’s a finance thing but it’s something I’d love as the data from that is superb and you can programme training and people’s loads to use that data to your benefit. So that’s our next step.

“We are pushing forward and these little things help.”
