Rainworth see off young Stags to win cup

Rainworth MWFC won the Green Energy Cup with a 2-1 victory against a young Mansfield Town XI at Kirklington Road last night.

The first half was keenly contested and, although both sides played some delightful football, neither side troubled the respective keepers in the first 45 minutes.

That changed at the start of the second half when virtually straight from the kick-off Rainworth took the lead after Steve Owens put the ball into the net following good work from Craig Mitchell.

Rainworth continued to dominate, creating the majority of the chances, and it came as no surprise when Matty Jones doubled the lead in the 60th minute from a well-taken free kick.

As both sides tired, chances came at both ends, and with five minutes left Mansfield pulled a goal back when, in a goalmouth scramble, a sliced Rainworth clearance ended in their own net, Mark Dudley appearing to get the final touch.

Rainworth were unlucky not to score a third when Steve Owens easily beat the keeper only to see his effort flash past the post.

This was to be the final effort in what had been a hard-fought encounter with Rainworth having the better of the chances.
