Matt Green honoured, but Mansfield Town mostly overlooked at awards ceremony

Matt Green was named Conference Premier Player of the Year as the Stags were officially given their Blue Square Bet Championship Trophy at the Conference presentations at the weekend.

But he was the only one of the Championship-winning side to feature in the Team of the Season, and Paul Cox was surprisingly pipped to the Manager of the Year award by title rival Steve Burr, of Kidderminster Harriers.

Cox said: “One or two eyebrows were raised we only had one player in Team of the Year. It does seem a bit strange when you consider only one other team in Britain won more matches than Mansfield Town. But that’s down to the people that pick the side obviously.

“People didn’t think we warranted any more. But it an uncontrollable for me so I don’t really worry about it.

“Steve Burr won Manager of the Year and, again, it’s down to opinions. This game is based on opinions. I know the chairman was really surprised. But I can’t question who picks up Manager of the Year or how it was done.”

However, Green walked away with the Golden Boot for top scorer as well as Player of the Year and Cox added: “The lad had a great season for us and the trophies were well deserved. I had a good chat with Matt and I know that a massive part of his heart is with Mansfield Town and he has a desire to come and sign for us. But he is doing what I expect players to do and keeping his options open.”

Cox added: “I am still most respectful of the Conference. I have had two good seasons and it’s been fun and it’s been tough. I have learnt so much being in that league. But that’s our past and the Football League is our future and it is a very tough league to be going into.”

Under stringent Football League rules, all players must now undergo a full medical, including heart scans, when they return.
