Mansfield Town’s youth team suffered a hammer blow in their hopes of securing the Football Conference Youth Alliance North Division Title after falling to a 4-1 defeat at Fleetwood on Monday, reports Craig Priest.
The young Stags have topped the league for the majority of the season, but following a defeat at Newcastle Town and a draw at Field Mill against Boston United, they were nudged off the top by FC Halifax Town, who they face in a title showdown next week.
Played under glorious sunshine, it was Stags who made the brighter start as leading hit man Adam Somes saw a quartet of chances denied.
Despite the Stags pressure it was the young Cod Army who struck the opener after good work through the middle saw Tom Peterson drill past Ryan Hopkins.
The Fleetwood front man then doubled the host’s lead with a beautiful solo effort cutting in from the right hand side on the half hour mark.
Mansfield again saw chances go to waste and conceded a third on the stroke of half-time when a low cross from the right hand side was easily converted by Ryan Brookes.
Stags grabbed one back after the break when Adam Somes, making his final appearance before the start of his suspension, hooked in a Liam Marsden long throw.
The Stags wasted several more efforts and were undone a final time in the final minute. Tom Peterson wrapped up his hat-trick with a well struck effort from the edge of the area as the Stags failed to close down the danger.
Yesterday’s 4-1 defeat at Fleetwood means the young Stags’ destiny is in the hands of others, providing they beat FC Halifax next Wednesday afternoon, they would need Gateshead to lose both their final two fixtures, and Ilkeston to slip up during their mammoth spell of four games in hand.
