MANSFIELD TOWN boss Paul Cox has strengthened his squad with the expected signing of former St Mirren winger Nick Hegarty.

The 25-year-old, who has been training with the Stags for the past 10 days, has put pen to paper on a deal which will last until Boxing Day.

Hegarty started his professional career at Grimsby, where he made almost 100 appearances for the Mariners in the Football League, earning two runners-up medals in the Play-Offs and Football League Trophy during the process.

The Wakefield-born winger moved to St Mirren in August 2010, but first team opportunities were hampered by an ankle injury. After signing this morning, Hegarty told “The set up and the training ground are good.  It seems a really positive place to be at.

“It has been a good 10 days here [on trial] and I’m now looking forward to getting some game time.”
