Mansfield Town PA announcer clocks up 25 years at the club

While Mansfield Town boss Paul Cox marked his 100th league game in charge of the club on Saturday, another man notched up an even more impressive landmark.

Alan Wilson marked 25 years as the club’s PA announcer during the 3-0 victory against Northampton Town on Saturday.

Alan, who is a boyhood fan of Stags, was presented with an engraved watch by club owner John Radford ahead of kick-off

“It was a fantastic surprise for me and it was just really nice to be appreciated like that,” said Alan.

“It was an emotional moment for me and I was filling up with tears. John Radford came down and said he needed the microphone for something and then did the presentation, it was a massive shock.”

Popular Alan first took on the role back in 1988 after years of standing on the old West Stand terracing watching his beloved team.

“I cannot remember who my first game in charge of the microphone was against, but it has been a wonderful 25 years.

“I have had some wonderful memories, especially last season. I always wanted to play ‘We are the champions’ and last season I got to live that dream,

“The play-off semi-final win against Northampton Town always stands out in my mind as well. It was a very dramatic night and I remember losing my voice.

“I just want to keep doing this as long as they will have me, I love every minute of it.”

Alan began his love affair with Mansfield Town when his dad took him to watch the memorable FA Cup defeat against Leicester City back in 1969.
