The judging panel comprises Sky Sports’ Football League expert Don Goodman; Football League head of communications John Nagle; League Managers’ Association director Olaf Dixon and Sky Bet football trading manager Paul Lowery.

The winner will be announced on Friday.

On Pearce, the nomination stated: “Since he was signed from non-League Torquay, the 25-year-old has quickly become the mainstay of a defence which conceded just two goals in five games. He was immense against Plymouth Argyle and Stevenage, organising the back line and mopping up superbly.”

Up against Pearce are Accrington midfielder Matt Crooks (converted from a forward without a League goal to a deep-lying midfielder and a cult hero who scores, with two stroked long-range efforts against Crawley Town and Yeovil Town. His ability to nick the ball away in a tackle has been equally impressive); and Barnet striker Michael Gash (September was the month in which he rediscovered the goalscoring prowess of his non-league days. Four in five games were the result of good positioning allied to the physical presence he brings as leader of the attacking line).

Completing the quartet is Wycombe full back Michael Harriman (Began September on the right wing and ended it at right-back. Not that it stopped him driving forward and whipping in dangerous crosses. As well as solid defensive work, his three goals included a 25-yard winner against Cambridge United).

Manager of the Month Award nominations have gone to John Coleman (Accrington Stanley), Keith Curle (Carlisle United), Ricardo Moniz (Notts County) and John Still (Luton Town).
