MANSFIELD Town boss Paul Cox says he wants to repay the fans for their support by setting up an FA Cup third round tie against Liverpool.

Stags will face the 18 time champions of England at One Call Stadium over the weekend of 5th and 6th January if they can overcome David Holdsworth’s Lincoln City on 11th December following Sunday’s FA Cup draw.

And the delighted boss says his side, who equalised deep into stoppage time to earn a 3-3 draw at Sincil Bank on Saturday, could not have wished for a more mouth-watering draw.

“The draw was a bit of a surreal moment,” said Cox. “When our number came out, I didn’t see that it was ours and it was our lass who jumped up when it was drawn.

“We could not have got a better draw, Liverpool are one of the biggest teams in world football. We have just got to make sure we win the replay.

“The support at Lincoln was fantastic and I hope the fans come out in force for the replay and help push us on into the next round.

“There will be a real buzz about the town and excitement amongst the fans. I hope we can win the replay for the fans because they deserve a game like this.

“I don’t think the draw puts any more pressure on the replay, it just adds to the spice and expectation.

“Matches like this are what football is all about. It is an exciting time for everyone at the club.”

And Cox also believes that a lucrative clash against the five times European champions would also be the perfect reward for chairman John Radford.

Said Cox: “I’m also really pleased for the chairman. He joked with me yesterday that we would draw one of the big teams.

“He has done so much for both the club and for the town. If it happens this will be one of the biggest games in the club’s history.

“The game will more than likely be on TV and it is the perfect reward.”

Mansfield previously faced the Anfield side in September 1970 in the League Cup when they lost 3-2 after holding Liverpool to a 0-0 draw at Field Mill.
