Injury setback for Stags defender Thompson

JOHN Thompson is hoping to resume his fight for a spot in the Stags side to face Telford on Saturday week after picking up a slight knee injury in training.

Defender Thompson, still waiting for his Stags debut after suffering dreadful facial injuries in a pre-season friendly at Ilkeston, sat out the 3-0 friendly defeat by Northampton Town on Tuesday and will also miss out on today’s friendly game at Forest.

No one was near him when he pulled up in training and a swelling of fluid appeared at the side of his knee.

“We don’t believe it’s anything serious and I hope John will be fit to play in the friendly at Eastwood on Monday night.

“Knowing John he will be champing at the bit to play at Telford.

“It was good to see the old John Thompson in training last week, heading and kicking everything while being composed.”

Stags’ 3-0 friendly defeat by a strong Northampton Town on Tuesday was described a good work-out by Cox, who again took the time to look at a few trialists.

Lee Stevenson, back from a loan spell, looked sharp and played for 90 minutes while Rhys Day’s comeback continued with another 70 minutes under his belt.

After today’s game at Forest the squad will be given the weekend off to relax before retuning to train hard on Monday and then play a friendly at Eastwood Town on Monday night.

Cox may add to his squad today and said: “I am hoping to bring in one or two, maybe even three, fresh faces before Telford to keep players on their toes and hope to have one deal completed in the next 24 hours.

“We need to show our supporters we are serious about being in the pack and getting promotion. We are still well-placed, despite this mini-blip and, while I can’t promise we will win the title or be in the play-offs, all I ever wanted was, by Christmas, to still be in the chasing pack. Then anything can happen.”
