Hearn scores in Stags reserves defeat, but injury blow for Shires

Liam Hearn took another big step forward on the recovery road when he completed 90 minutes and scored from the penalty spot as Mansfield Town’s reserves lost 2-1 at home to Gateshead yesterday.

Striker Hearn, coming back from a cruciate ligament injury, has played a cameo role in a couple of recent first team games.

But yesterday he got a full game under his belt and buried a powerful penalty into the top corner that gave keeper Alex Baird no chance on 70 minutes.

Soon after, Baird was sent off for abuse shouted at the referee and Mansfield looked set for victory against 10 men.

However, there was a twist as the visitors produced an 86th minute equaliser through Dillon Morse.

Matty Briggs than hit a Mansfield post before Tom Marshall stole a stoppage time winner.

There was a blow for promising young Mansfield defender Corbin Shires, who was on the bench for the first team last weekend.

He limped off with a badly cut knee near the end of the first half and his hopes of making a first team debut at Accrington this weekend must now be in doubt.
