Flitcroft surpasses Palmer as longest wait for first win as Stags manager

David Flitcroft goes into Saturday's derby at Chesterfield looking to end what has been the longest wait for a first win of any new Mansfield Town manager in history.

Flitcroft has now had eight games in charge without a victory, surpassing the six games in which Carlton Palmer failed to win in 2004.

Palmer started with two draws, three defeats and a draw before he won a game, then going on to win three out of four.

Flitcroft started out with three draws, followed by four successive defeats – the worst run of the season – before Tuesday’s draw at Stevenage.

Back in February 1979, Billy Bingham won his first game in charge over Hull before a draw and five defeats – but that maiden win was already under his belt before his underwhelming follow-up run.

Palmer came in as ‘stand-in’ manager after Keith Curle was suspended to oversee an FA Cup home tie with Colchester United, but fans always knew he would get the job permanently from close friend, chairman Keith Haslam.

Flitcroft has had a hard time keeping the squad on song after being brought in when boss Steve Evans quit with just 12 games to go and automatic promotion a possibility.
