Since the sacking of Kevin Wilkins on Monday, Cox (43) has been made favourite for the job by the bookies as the Welsh club look to emulate Cox’s success with the Stags in winning the Conference title and returning to the Football League in 2013.

Cox said: “I’m looking for work and obviously it is a club with massive potential, so it’s a job I’d obviously be interested in if Wrexham wanted to speak to me.

“It’s a club with frightening potential and a big club at that level of football.

“When I took the Mansfield job they were in a similar position. Wrexham is a club with a great Football League history so yes I’m interested.

“We locked horns a few times with Wrexham and I always enjoyed the games with them.

“We won the title there in 2013 and the club needs to be back in the League. The supporters are crying out for success there.”
