Duffy’s red card sends Stags to heavy home defeat

ROB Duffy’s needless red card in first half stoppage time sparked another spectacular Stags collapse to a 5-2 home defeat against play-off hopefuls Fleetwood Town at Field Mill on Tuesday night, reports John Lomas.

His elbow on former Aston Villa star Alan Wright was Mansfield’s sixth red card of a season of indiscipline and came with the sides all square at 1-1, Adam Murray’s opener having been cancelled out, leaving home fans livid with his actions.

New boss Duncan Russell had promised fans there would be no more embarrassing collapses after the 7-2 debacle at Grimsby. But the 10 men were torn apart after the break last night, quickly conceding four in 13 nightmare minutes as home fans headed for the exits, having seen enough.

Almost inevitably, Brazilian star Magno Vieira, who almost joined Mansfield in the summer, grabbed a 16-minute hat-trick to add to the one he scored against Stags at home as Fleet came from behind to complete a double.

Fleetwood’s other goals came from Seddon and McGuire. Skipper Foster pulled back a late consolation for the Stags.
