With Adam Chapman on fire on Saturday and another goal for Matt Green, Stags moved joint top of the table but remain third on goal difference – As I sit here on Sunday evening and pen this week’s column, I can’t help but ponder the weekend’s results and wonder what will happen should things go our way over the next four games.
Let’s face it, these next two weeks for our beloved side are operation like; things have to go right otherwise we’ll probably end up with another season of conference football.
Every time I visit the One Call Stadium I’m still haunted by the memory of last terms play-off semi-final defeat to York City and remember balling my eyes out underneath the press desk.
Every time it rains I have flash backs of being a 17 year-old boy wondering around in the pouring rain trying to escape the fact Mansfield had been relegated out of the football league in 2008.
If we can stretch our winning run over the next four games then just maybe these memories will be banished, as I’m sure yours will be too.
I don’t think there is any point in writing ‘If we remain unbeaten over the next four’ as I don’t believe four draws would be enough to win the league – a bold statement I know but for us to be crowed champions we have to crush our rivals.
This may sound a touch arrogant and no disrespect is meant to anyone with this line but, our excellent form has been down to beating struggling sides, something we’ve always been able to do.
Yeah, you could say Luton aren’t a struggling side normally but this term they are and, in my opinion, will be lucky to finish in the play-offs.
What Stags have to do is perform the way we know the can, letting that fire in their bellies set the stadium alight and add more points onto the board.
Anyone can beat anyone this term as results on Saturday showed once more, the title is there for the taking and, out of all the sides fighting for it, we are the team whose destiny is in our control the most.
On paper we are the joint best side over the last eight games with Kidderminster, the best side at home over the entire season so far, the third best away side overall, the second best attacking side with a similar defensive record.
Football however isn’t played on paper and it’s time now to prove we deserve the crown.
One more win and we set a new club record. BEWARE, Stags are coming to get you!
