Hotshot hero Matt Green’s 27th goal of the season clinched the BSBP title for the Stags in today’s 1-0 home win over Wrexham to crown the striker’s best-ever season.
Now Mansfield’s biggest summer task may be holding onto a player that has scored 57 goals in two seasons and is now out of contract.
“This is definitely the best moment of my career,” he said. “To be a champion, to win the Golden Boot, once it’s confirmed, and to score the goal that clinched the title – you couldn’t have it any better could you?
“It’s what you dream of as a kid running round the green.
“It feels almost surreal. It’s something we’ve wanted all season and been building towards. To have the chance to actually achieve it is very special.
“To be honest it wasn’t a great game, it was a typical Conference game, but we managed to grind out a result.
“I am over the moon for all the lads. They all deserve this. We don’t have any one individual. We have worked so hard and been through so much together.”
Already Green is inevitably being linked with Championship and League One clubs.
He said: “I am out of contract now so we will have to see what happens.
“All of this talk is just rumour at the moment as I have had nothing put in front of me in black and white.
“I am going to have to sign a contract somewhere and make a decision for my career. But of course I would be tempted to stay here. The gaffer has looked after me since I came and I have had the two best years of my life here.
“If it’s not broke, you don’t fix it. But let’s celebrate this first and then I will look at next season.”
