Mansfield Town’s players can take inspiration from the way British heavyweight boxing star Anthony Joshua achieved his latest victory believes manager David Flitcroft.

Joshua stormed to a seventh round knockout of Russian Alexander Povetkin to retain his WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO world heavyweight championship belts at Wembley Stadium.

“You look at AJ on Saturday. He teased him up for four or five rounds and it was a really good battle,” said Flitcroft.

“But when he saw an opportunity to really see him off, he just did it in an emphatic way.

“I saw a real ambition from a fighter to be really ruthless at the right time.

“You can learn from everything that’s out there.

“Belief will only come from winning matches. That’s what our fans want. We are under no illusions about that and this staff will work night and day to deliver on that.”

He added: “The problem this season has been not finishing teams off and going for that jugular.

“Don’t settle for 1-0. Make a game 2-0, give them no hope and nothing to fight for. You know what that second goal does to the opposition – it hurts them.

“It’s not a jab, it’s a knockout blow – a killer punch. That’s what we are working on this week.”
