Mansfield Town ‘still trying’ to make additional summer transfer signings, confirms Nigel Clough

Mansfield Town are looking to further bolster their ranks ahead of the 2026/27 season.

Nigel Clough has confirmed that Stags are still on the market for new signings as they prepare to build on last season's impressive tenth-place finish.

Mansfield have already welcomed new signing David McGoldrick to the One Call Stadium, having identified their need for extra attacking firepower.

Stags saw off the competition for McGoldrick’s signature and brought him on a free transfer. The 38-year-old penned a one-year deal after leaving former club Barnsley as a free agent.

Speaking during his first pre-season press conference, Clough confirmed the club are ‘still trying’ to get business over the line when asked whether fans should expect more new player arrivals.

“We’ve got a couple of spaces spare in the squad. I think we’ve been pretty clear about what we’re after. We’re after maybe another striker and a midfielder, and that’ll do us. All the defenders have come back in good shape so we’re okay there. We had such a good defensive record last season so it’ll be difficult for us to improve on that.”

Indeed, Stags finished last season with the joint-third best defensive record in League One, conceding 50 goals across 46 games. Only Stevenage and champions Lincoln City let fewer goals in throughout the campaign.

“Baily Cargill is back – we missed him for the last few months of the season. Which is good, plenty of competition back there as well and a lot of flexibility formation and position wise,” Clough continued.

Who will Mansfield Town sign next?

Another transfer rumour has been doing the rounds recently, linking Mansfield Town to Preston North End striker Michael Smith.

Our sister website the Lancashire Post reported that initial talks have been held between the two clubs over a potential deal for the 34-year-old.

Stephen and Georgia discuss the links between Mansfield and Michael Smith here during a recent episode of Stags Talk.
