MANSFIELD TOWN RETRO: Stags edged out in FA Cup fifth round by Leeds United

Over 10,000 Town supporters followed their team to Elland Road - and they even got a standing ovation from the Leeds’ faithful at the end in recognition of their effort.

In fact, the away team could have, and actually thought they had, taken the lead after 13 minutes of this cup tie.

Jimmy Goodfellow found the back of the net but his effort was ruled out by the referee after he judged Dudley Roberts to have “climbed up” Paul Reaney in providing the assist.

Leeds soon found their stride though and took the lead on 27 minutes.

Johnny Giles fired home from inside the box to send the majority of the crowd into raptures.

Leeds soon doubled their advantage when Alan Clarke found the net after tidy work from Mick Jones.

Despite a good effort from Stags they failed to bridge the gap between the two sides although won plenty of plaudits for keeping the hosts at bay for the rest of the contest.

Leeds reached the final that year but lost 2-1 to Chelsea in a replay at Old Trafford after a 2-2 draw in the original game at Wembley in front of 100,000.
