MANSFIELD TOWN RETRO: Controversial goal sees Stags go down to Port Vale in 1982

Town were 1-0 in front when after 51 minutes goalkeeper Rod Arnold made an individual error for Vale’s equaliser.

The controversy arose as Vale’s Mark Chamberlain, who would go on to play for England later that year, had ran off the pitch to avoid being pulled up for offside.

He then proceeded to run back on the field, dispossess a bemused Arnold, who had been over-casual in dealing with a simple backpass before tapping into the net.

This came after the Stags had gone 1-0 in front through Charlie Bell’s ninth-minute strike.

The Stags dominated the first half but the controversial equaliser hit them hard and Vale never looked back as Ernie Moss’ header and Tony Sealy’s effort sealed an unlikely win for the Valiants.

Town boss Stuart Boam was incensed at the Chamberlain goal and even ran from the directors’ box onto the pitch.

He confronted the referee and the linesman before being ushered away.

Boam refused to comment on the incident after the match.
