Louis Reed admitted it had been a shock to be made Mansfield Town captain in the absence of injured Aden Flint.

But the midfield ace is enjoying his new role as Stags aim for a sixth league win in a row on Saturday.

“It's been a real honour and a bit of a shock,” he said

“There are other lads in the squad that I would personally put before me as captain.

“I walked into the changing room and the team sheet went up about an hour before kick off and a little 'C' was below my name.

“It didn't really sink in until the after the game that I had been out there as captain – it was a proud moment. “It was a privilege to be honest and something I didn't expect. But I am more than grateful to take it on.

“I try to lead by example on the pitch, doing the right things and being in the right place at the right time.

“I didn't want to change how I am around the place just because I have got the armband and I think that has gone down well.”

The players have enjoyed two weeks off for the international break and Reed said: “It's been nice to get our feet up a bit as it's been a tough start to the season and a lot of hard work has gone in.

“All the lads are well rested now and ready to go again.

“I know a few of the lads said they didn't want the break and wanted to carry on the momentum.

“But rest is just as important as training and hopefully we will hit the ground running again.

“It's always odd having a Saturday without a game. I like to watch Soccer Saturday so that was nice. But I am more than happy to be back playing again.”

On Stags' fantastic start to their League One campaign, he said: “I don't think anyone expected us to start this well even though we know we are capable.

“It's a tough division and a big step up for everyone, but we have handled it well.

“Without getting carried away, it's a great start. It's been a bit of a whirlwind.

“We are playing with massive confidence and, with the majority of the lads having been here last season, we know each other's strengths.

“I have tried to carry on with business as usual. I don't like to have too much pressure on me but I think I am playing quite well.”
