Rainworth Miners’ Welfare better mastered the wind of Storm Brian to claim a 3-1 Northern Counties Least League Premier Division win at Athersley Recreation.

The Wrens, playing against the wind, defended well in the first half before Ben Walker’s wind-assisted effort evaded Ben Townsend’s dive.

On 51 minutes the visitors levelled when Luke Walker’s fierce shot was spilled and Tomas Poole put in the rebound.

Rainworth started to dominate as they took advantage of the conditions with plenty of shots.

Matt Sykes gave them the lead, driving forward and scoring from 30 yards. On 69 minutes, Sykes hit a wind-assisted screamer into the top corner from 35 yards to secure victory.
