Hitting Stags winner against Chesterfield lives long in the memory for Calvin Andrew

The sight of striker Calvin Andrew running the full length of the Proact Stadium pitch to celebrate his local derby winning goal with Mansfield Town supporters is a vivid memory for fans and the player.

Andrew scored the only goal the last time Mansfield visited Chesterfield and it proved to be the only goal of his short Stags career as he played just 15 times in 2013/14 before being released.

“I remember it being a hard-fought game. The goal came from a corner. I got away from my man and managed to put it away.

“Then I ran the full length of the pitch to celebrate with our fans with most of my team mates following me. I thought it was important in a derby like that to celebrate with your fans as you know what it means to them.

“In the end we won and it was a brilliant day I’ll never forget.

“We had a good team and we had a really good season in the end.”

Andrew, now at Rochdale, wished things had turned out differently and he had been given more starts with Mansfield.

“Things were going on out of my power. But I really enjoyed my time there and the fans were brilliant,” he said.

“I still run into them here and there and they told me I should have stayed longer.

“I have a few friends there now like Rhys Bennett and it’s still a club I have very fond memories of and one whose result I always look for on a Saturday night.”
