Glapwell let two-goal lead slip

It was a classic case of a game of two halves as, despite holding a comfortable 2-0 lead at the break, Glapwell were pegged back by two second half Askern goals in a 2-2 Central Midlands League North Division draw at Hall Corner.

Glapwell started the game positively and were rewarded after only four minutes when Adam Seward flicked the ball on to James Whitfield, who finished emphatically into the top corner from the edge of the area.

Ryan Hopkins had to be alert to keep Glapwell in front, though, as he came out quickly to deny Michael Attard, who hit an effort that flew just past the angle of crossbar and post from 25 yards.

Geoffrey Gouveia then played in James Whitfield who fired just over before Carl Vickers found Gouveia, who also failed to hit the target.

Glapwell went closer when Gouveia pulled the ball back from the left to Whitfield, who was denied by a fine save by visiting keeper Anthony Sykes.

Glapwell’s lead was doubled, though, on 28 minutes when Sykes missed Whitfield’s through ball, which gave Adam Seward an easy finish from a couple of yards out.

Just after half-time, Glapwell had a chance to kill the game off when Brad Dowdall played in Seward, who was denied by Anthony Sykes, before the visitors started to get a foothold in the game.

On 57 minutes, they got themselves back in it when Ben Straw’s cross was picked up by Michael Attard at the back post, who pulled it back to Charlie McGough to finish from 12 yards.

Alex Rennie’s inswinging free kick was then headed just wide by Leon Cusworth before Austin Henry headed straight at Ryan Hopkins.

The visitors levelled on 65 minutes when Michael Attard latched on to a long ball, and he was given too much space to break into the area before finishing low inside the far post.

Glapwell had the best chances to win it after that, though, but Whitfield headed Craig Humphreys’ cross over before Ross Murcott was denied by Anthony Sykes who made a good save to tip over his long range effort.
