Glapwell fight back twice for a point

Glapwell were guilty of making a slow start to the game and they fell a goal down on 24 minutes when Luke Smithson played in Matt Brown who finished via the inside of the post.

Ashley Ruse had Glapwell’s first real chance on 34 minutes when he hit a left-foot volley against the outside of the post after his original free-kick had been blocked by the wall.

Glapwell then hit the post for the second time before half-time when Emmanuel Bockarie connected with Adam Seward’s cross from the right but saw his shot cannon back off the woodwork.

Bentley had the chance to double their lead just after half-time but Lee Drobac blazed a shot high over the bar before Joshua Marshall blocked a Drobac shot on the line.

Glapwell levelled with 15 minutes remaining, though, when Derrick Miller’s cross from the right was turned past his own goalkeeper by Bentley player/manager Chris Scott.

But with eight minutes remaining, Bentley went back in front when Ricky Sharp converted a penalty after Sean Gardner had tripped Billy Parkhouse in the area.

There was another twist in the tale, though, as Glapwell rescued a point when a corner was only cleared as far as Tom Robley who hit a sweet volley into the top corner from the edge of the area.

After the trials and tribulations of the FA Vase last week, which ended in a 1-0 replay defeat at Huntingdon, a slightly weary 10-men AFC Mansfield side beat Kinsley Boys 2-1 at home in the first meeting ever between these two clubs.

Kinsley are well known for their physical competitive approach to the game and weren’t the most ideal opponents after a busy previous week.

This showed in the opening minutes as the Bulls were slow to get started.

Inevitably the visitors went in front on eight minutes. Lacklustre marking saw the ball delivered into the box and Todd Wood was first to react to the loose ball firing past Dale Sheppard from six yards.

This was the wake up call the Bulls needed and they started to stamp their authority on the game. Callum Green rounded the keeper on 10 minutes, but fired into the sidenetting.

Top scorer Dean Rick bought the sides level on 17 minutes, coolly finishing in the six yard box.

Sam Holmes went close on 21 minutes, his volley shaving the post from a Danny Tighe corner and then Green saw his effort saved by Andrew Joburns after a slide rule pass from Rick.

The Bulls took the lead on 37 minutes when Buxton crossed from the right and Rick got a touch, with the ball falling to Mark Carter who turned past two defenders before firing past Joburns from 12 yards.

Captain Dean Rick was dismissed a couple of minutes before the break after a 50-50 ball left a Kinsley player down injured. This meant that the home side would have to play all the second half a man down.

Danny Naylor had his low drive beaten away by Joburns in the opening minutes of the second half.

But the expected pressure didn’t materialise and it was AFC Mansfield who had the better chances in the half.

Mark Carter hit the bar on 57 minutes with Joburns beaten as the Kinsley goal led a charmed life.

Carter and Green saw efforts deflected for corners as Kinsley wilted under the ceaseless pressure.

With 10 minutes to go Carter and Danny Naylor both had shots saved by Joburns and Nathan Whitehead saw his 12-yard drive easily held by the keeper.
