"George is a fantastic signing. He's box to box, full of energy," he said.

"I'm really looking forward to working with George, I think he'll bring loads of energy to the team.

"Myself, being a midfielder, I know what he's about. I'm looking forward to him adding to the squad."

The 23-year-old - the younger brother of Colchester United midfielder Tom Lapslie - came through the Addicks' youth system, scoring on his first team debut in an EFL Trophy tie against Crawley Town in August 2017.

"You're always looking what's out there," McGuire added.

"George has quality and brings energy. You need that box-to-box midfielder.

"You always want to improve the squad."

Lapslie has made more than 50 appearances for his current club, most of them coming in the Championship and League One.

Lapslie found the net in one of his 10 Championship appearances last term, in a 3-1 win over Luton Town in February 2020.

He also won Charlton’s Young Player of the Year award in the 2018-19 campaign.

Lapslie said: "I run very hard and I'll give everything I've got. Hopefully I can add some quality to the final third.

"The gaffer (Graham Coughlan) wants me to play in a higher midfield role, and he's expecting assists and goals."

Manager Coughlan said: George has Championship experience and he's a bundle of energy, with quality on the ball.

"He will add competition for places in the middle of the park and I’m looking forward to working with him."
