Garibaldi win cup after spot kicks drama

Garibaldi College kept their nerve to win the Year 11 Mansfield Schools Cup Final after a 0-0 draw against Quarrydale at Mansfield Town’s One Call Stadium.

Garibaldi started the game slowly and nervously on a very quick pitch. At times they managed to get the ball down and play but all too often were lacking that killer instinct in the final third of the pitch.

The second half once again was a tight affair with the heavens opening and making any kind of football a real task.

Apart from a rebound onto the Quarrydale post and a few long range shots, the game was at stalemate and, with the conditions getting worse by the minute, either side could have won in the dying minutes.

That took the game to the lottery of three penalties per side and it was left to goalkeeper Jack Hardy to produce the deciding moment.

Alex Taylor was the first to step up planting his right footed penalty into the roof of the net only for Quarrydale to reply with a calmly taken kick. Jamie Royle then stepped up to make it 2-1 with Garibaldi’s second penalty.

Then came the deciding moment as Hardy, looking big and confident, produced a save in the left hand top corner to give Tom Slone the chance to win the cup at last for Garibaldi from a spot kick which he coolly sidefooted the ball past the Quarrydale keeper.
