First league loss of the season for Shirebrook Town as Worsbrough fight back

Shirebrook Town slipped to their first home Toolstation Northern Counties East League Division One defeat of the season after Worsbrough Bridge Athletic came back from a goal behind to bag all three points with a 2-1 win at Langwith Road on Tuesday night.

Worsbrough edged the chances in the first half, but Aaron Moxam gave Shirebrook the lead on 12 minutes after beating his marker on the right and cutting in to take the ball past keeper Jared Oxley before slotting the ball into the empty net.

However, Shirebrook’s lead lasted only two minutes when James Young equalised with an in-swinging corner from the right that went straight in at the crowded far post after going over keeper Joe McCormack.

Shirebrook hoped to press home having the advantage of the slope in the second half, but Worsbrough snatched the lead just four minutes after the restart, Adam Podmore turning cleverly in the box to gain himself half a yard before stroking the ball into the Shirebrook goal from 16 yards, with McCormack and two home defenders caught flat-footed.

Nevertheless, Shirebrook looked to get back into the game and Moxam had one cleared off the line six minutes later.

And in a frantic late finish, Shirebrook went close again four minutes into time added on at the end when Ben Cobley’s corner from the right was headed towards goal at the far post, only to be cleared off the line when it looked like it must go in to give the home side a share of the spoils.
