The Wood shuffled the pack again with a number of the squad unavailable through injury.

Liam Hearn was in the action early in the game, needing treatment for a head injury but returned in time to see strike partner Kieran Wells force the first save of the game.

However, it was the home side that struck first, Greg Tobin poking home after a corner kick had caused confusion in The Wood’s defence.

That came on 16 minutes and only four minutes later the injury list increased as captain Joe Shaw had to leave the field following a kick to the shin.

Hearn had a great chance to level only a minute later but his header fell the wrong side of the post.

Despite playing into a strong wind The Wood were probing well, Lewis Belgrave almost found that man Hearn and then saw a 25 yard strike well saved.

The equaliser was not long coming though when Tim Gregory swept the ball home after a brilliant counter attack.

The half came to a close with a scare for The Wood, a free kick was crashed against the bar as half time was reached all square.

The second half saw Dunkirk start brightly, Jordan Alls headed wide from a promising position in the opening minute.

Belgrave and Joe Lumley were now having more influence and Lumley won a free kick within range.

But Carter Widdowson – who had gone close only minutes earlier – fired Sherwood ahead just after the hour.

Belgrave went close twice in two minutes both time seeing his shot go agonisingly wide.

Tim Gregory flashed a header across goal from Nathan Clarke’s cross, before Hearn had an effort saved.

The pressure finally paid off when Gregory got his second of the day with a calm finish with five minutes remaining.

Sherwood face Kimberley at home on Saturday.
