The 34-year-old defender-cum-midfielder will also provide back-up to the first team squad as a player if needed.

Edwards, who moved to Notts from Grimsby Town in 2004 and went on to spend eight seasons with the club, has been training with Shaun Derry’s squad in recent weeks and turned out in a pre-season friendly at Carlton Town last month.

The Hessle-born former Hull City trainee will take over as strength and conditioning coach from Lee Taylor, who is set to leave the club this week to pursue a new opportunity.

Edwards will be handed the number 28 shirt, and brings with him a wealth of experience from a career that has seen him make over 500 first team appearances.

His last club was Carlisle United, from where he was released at the end of the 2013-14 season.
