Don’t let the sun go down, we’ve had a tough season

Football folk have been soaked through, almost swept away by the storms and endured some pretty awful Saturdays this season – and that’s just in the press box.
Then the sun comes out but there’s nothing to cover and now we’re left wondering whether we will be tapping the laptop keys again this season.

Hide AdWhat looks a certainty is that football will not resume before May, if at all.
Rugby union has already been lost, apart from the Gallagher Premiership.
It’s not until you lose something that you realise how much you miss it, yes, even when it’s tipping down and blowing a gale.
Fans, young and old, look forward to their Saturday afternoons at their favourite club but now the gates are locked at grounds up and down the country.

Hide AdSeeing those gates locked over the weekend brought it home to me just what those loyal Bury fans went through when their beloved club was wound-up.
They won’t have the chance to go back to Gigg Lane anytime soon - but we all hope to be back at our own clubs, if not this season then the next.
It feels like there is unfinished business - surely the season can’t end now? But, as each week goes by, that looks increasingly the case.
If the authorities can get on top of the coronavirus then there’s every chance the Premier League could resume, as would be the case with the EFL.

Hide AdNational League football resuming would depend on which clubs can balance the books in terms of outgoings on wages and income through the gates.
Smaller leagues would be more of an issue with players not on the same salaries as their National League counterparts.
And getting time off work three times a week would be almost impossible for players at clubs further down the football pyramid.
Uncertain times.
