Coach problems as Teversal suffer bad day by the sea

Teversal players had to head to the coast by car after their coach failed to show, then went down 3-0 at title-chasing Cleethorpes Town in their penultimate NCEL Division One game on Saturday.

It turned into a ‘double coach disaster’ as club coach Paul Wilson got lost en route along with their practice balls!

Cleethorpes went into their final home and penultimate game of the season knowing that they had to win if they wanted to keep their own destiny in their own hands, with Shaw Lane and Bottesford breathing down their necks for both the championship and one of the two promotion places.

But Teversal’s preparation was in total disorder when the team bus failed to turn up and they had to jump into their cars for the trip to the coast.

The players arrived in plenty of time, but coach Wilson managed to get lost and home chairman David Patterson had to offer some help, though assistant manager Matt Powell was less supportive.

As expected, a great crowd of 197 turned out to support the home side, their second highest league crowd of the season, with the air of expectation of a comfortable home win around.

The home side’s early dominance was rewarded with a goal on four minutes when Grant’s cross was parried by Brooks under pressure from Funnell into the path of Oglesby, who then lifted a cross to the far post where Mascall headed home from close range to settle any early nerves.

On eight minutes it could have been two when Richardson hit a speculative effort from 20 yards that just cleared the Tevie crossbar.

A minute later, though, Dickinson lost the ball in midfield to Fleet who played an inch-perfect ball to Cooper, who dummied to create himself space and left Hauton in his wake before clinically finishing to make it 2-0.

Teversal started to have some possession as they settled into the game and the hosts dropped the tempo after their lightening start, but again Mascall went close with an effort that Brooks tipped round the post.

Teversal created a couple of opportunities with Burrell hitting a 20 yard speculative effort and then they had an effort cleared off the line when Dave Cockerill’s corner received the slightest touch from Burrell with Grant alert on the line to head clear with goalkeeper Fenty well beaten.

Cooper was leading the line superbly for the host and he forced Brooks into another save on 30 minutes.

With half-time approaching, Cleethorpes should have put the game to bed when Weaver’s pass to Hauton was intercepted by Oglesby. He raced down the left flank before playing a perfectly weighted pass to Funnell, who rounded Brooks before lacking the composure to finish, putting a poor effort into the sidenetting with an open goal at his mercy.

Credit to Cleethorpes, who controlled the second period, creating a number of opportunities and on 53 minutes saw an effort from Flett clip the outside of the post with Brooks well beaten in the visitors goal.

Teversal created a couple of opportunities and had they taken one who knows how the home side would have reacted?
The best of the efforts came around the hour mark when Dave Cockerill crossed with Burrell taking the ball in his stride, allowing Fenty to come racing of his line to smother the opportunity away.

The scoring was completed on 75 minutes when Dave Cockerill’s pass was intercepted by McFarland before finding Oglesby, who clinically finished from 18 yards making it 3-0.

You would have thought the hosts would have coasted in the final 15 minutes, but what they actually showed was the disappointing side to their game and why they sit at the bottom of the fair play league.

The host team had shown commitment and tenacity in the challenges all game, but when Teversal sub Newton started putting in the same sort of challenges, the home players and bench were clearly unhappy and Reece Newell was twice lucky not to see a red card for elbows

It was a blot on what was an excellent performance by the home side and one that should see them promoted, if not crowned champions.
