Clipstone slam five past Premier side in cup

Division One Clipstone swept aside NCEL Premier Division outfit Liversedge 5-0 in the second round of the NCEL League Cup last night.

Liversedge started well and immediately made headway into the Clipstone half over on the left where a good tackle from Rob Paling stopped them in their tracks 20 yards out for a throw in.

Clipstone started making inroads themselves, with several players moving the ball around swiftly.

Eventually Dan Wood over on the right received the ball and he won a corner after his cross was deflected out.

When the ball was swung into the deep again, an attempted cross was deflected out for a second successive corner, this time on the left.

Steve Whitehead played the ball out to Matty Ord who was standing adjacent to and in front of the left edge of the area.

Ord ran at the defenders at pace and burst inside the area and unleashed an almighty thunderbolt across the keeper and into the far corner of goal to give the Cobras the lead.

Clipstone were very much in control from this point with keeper Nick Siddons having very little to do in the first half, which was testament to the players he had in front of him, Karl Colley, Stu Hill Rob Paling and Callum Mawby mopping up everything that the visitors could throw at them.

The workrate of Clipstone’s front two of Josh Gibson and Jamie Smith was outstanding who, along with the midfield four of Dan Wood Steve Whitehead Steve Carty and Matty Ord, were chasing down and hassling the Liversedge players, giving them no time to settle.

On 20 minutes Mawby picked up a loose ball and drove forward. He passed to Whitehead who then released Wood, who was playing full of confidence, and he ran at and beat his defender over on the right and drove a low cross to the far post where a very grateful Gibson was on hand to ram the ball home at the far post.

Just before the half-hour mark Clipstone were on the attack once again.

It was Ord who fired in a cross from the left which was looped clear to 30 yards out where Wood met the ball on the full volley straight back at goal and over the keeper’s head for what has to be one of the goals of the season, and would have graced any football arena in the world.

Manager Chris Millington was giving his instructions from the dugout making sure his players understood the importance of keeping the clean sheet up to half-time, which they did.

Siddons made a great save on 38 minutes with Liversedge’s only shot on target in the first half. He was unsighted from the effort from the left back, who curled a shot with pace low to the far corner with a packed penalty area. But Siddons tipped the ball onto the post and was quickly up to collect before the visitors could pull one back.

Ord was running at Liversedge defenders at pace all game and won free kick after free kick after being scythed down several times during the second half. With the resulting set pieces Clipstone won numerous corners.

On 69 minutes it was from one of those corners that Clipstone grabbed the fourth goal. Steve Carty took it over on the right and swung one right under the crossbar and straight into the far corner of goal.

Then on 77 minutes another cynical foul on Matty Ord 25 yards out from goal saw Rob Paling with the direct kick making the keeper dive to his right and tip the ball off his goal line, but Dan Wood was first on the scene to lift the ball over the keeper at the far post to complete a real five star performance.
