The visitors ply their trade in the Central Midlands Football League Division One South, two steps below the Cobras, but on the day they were the better team and deserved their victory.

The visitors were gifted two goals inside the first 16 minutes. Danny Williams scored from close range on 12 minutes after Clipstone failed to clear the ball out of their area despite having several opportunities to do so.

It got worse for the home side after 16 minutes when a Michael Trench mistake near the half way line let in Williams, who ran in on goal and deftly placed the ball over Jamie Bailey.

Sherwood almost made it three at the midway point of the half when Gavin King hit the post with a shot from the edge of the area.

The home side created two half chances from dead ball situations towards the end of the half when Salt got on the end of a Josh Nodder free kick, but his header lacked power and was cleared.

Skipper Richard Patterson then got a glancing header to a Nodder corner but it was just wide of the post.

In the second-half, the better football was still being played by the visitors and Bailey did well to block an effort from Ricky Starbuck on 64 minutes.

Sherwood keeper Alex Smith’s first save of note came after a great cross field ball from Milner found Andrew Fox just inside the area. The midfielder chose to place his shot rather than go for power and Smith was able to keep the ball out.

Clipstone were given a lifeline on 78 minutes when Nodder scored for the second consecutive game from the penalty spot after a foul on Milner.

But Sherwood wrapped their win up on 88 minutes when Liam Theakstone finished well following a break forward.

Clipstone host Albion Sports on Saturday at 3pm.
