Chesterfield FC sack Dean Saunders

Saturday’s 4-0 loss was the Spireites fourth reverse on the spin and the club's board have moved to make a change in management with Saunders having only taken over in the summer following the departure of Paul Cook.

Assistant Brian Carey has also left.

The club said: “Chesterfield have parted company with manager Dean Saunders and his assistant Brian Carey following a 4-0 defeat at home to Swindon Town.

“The result was Chesterfield’s fourth defeat in a row and leaves them just four points above the relegation zone.

“An interim management team, which will be announced in due course, will take temporary charge prior to the appointment of a new manager.

“Chairman Dave Allen thanked the managerial pair for their efforts, adding, ‘we will not be rushed into making a decision on a new manager’.

“Saunders was named as Paul Cook’s successor at the Proact Stadium in May.”

Chesterfield made the play-offs under Cook last season, before Cook left to take over at League Two Portsmouth.

However, Saunders has had to deal with a raft of departures with key players from that squad leaving in the summer, including Sam Clucas who joined Hull for £1.3 million, defender Tendayi Darikwa, who left for Burnley for £550,000, and influential midfielder Gary Roberts, who joined Cook at Portsmouth.
