Bulls on the rampage at Phoenix

Three AFC players scored their first goals for AFC Mansfield in a 7-0 Windsor Foodservices Central Midlands League win at Phoenix.

Danny Wiltshire scored a brace on his debut and Sam Holmes and Craig Cantrell both netted in the first half to open their accounts at the club.

Nathan Whitehead continued his impressive record of five goals in five starts for the club and midfielder Mark Carter popped up to score to make him third top scorer in the league.

The writing was on the wall for the home side with just 12 players available.

The Bulls raced into a 2-0 lead after just nine minutes. Whitehead opened the scoring with a superb curling drive from the edge of the box that hit the top corner of the net, and two minutes later, Carter rounded the keeper after good work from both Whitehead and Wiltshire before firing home from 10 yards.

AFC made it 3-0 on 17 minutes when Holmes brought the ball down in the box before turning and firing past Smith into the far corner, and on 20 minutes Cantrell half-volleyed home from the edge of the box.

The fifth came on 28 minutes as AFC were over-running the Phoenix back line. Carter played a superb through ball to Wiltshire and the striker guided it past keeper Smith with a sublime first touch.

It remained 5-0 at half-time when three of the Bulls’ U19s, Declan Brewin, Brad Wilson and Ryan Fletchercoming on.

It was 6-0 on 62 minutes, a surging run from Joe Meehan through the heart of the Phoenix defence and a hit low drive that came off the post, but Wiltshire was on hand to fire home the loose ball from 10 yards.

There could have been a lot more goals if it hadn’t been for the heroics of the Phoenix keeper Smith. Whitehead wasn’t to be denied though and on 88 minutes he got on the end of an excellent Carter cross to head past Smith from 10 yards.

Also in the Black Dragon North Division, Glapwell were left with nothing to show for a fine first half performance as they were ultimately beaten 5-1 by league leaders Westella Hanson at Hall Corner.

For the first 45 minutes, Glapwell more than matched the leaders with the turning point being Westella going in front for the second time just before the break.

Westella took the lead on 10 minutes when Chris Spinks pounced on a defensive error before finishing emphatically past Jamie Davies from the edge of the area.

Glapwell were only behind for two minutes, though, as Ash Barber tucked home from Andrei Pykett’s corner.

The remainder of the first half was as good as Glapwell have played recently as they really put the visitors under pressure but couldn’t get the goal they needed, with Ash Barber going close and they were also denied a penalty when Ashley Ruse’s shot was blocked by the arm of a defender.

Just before half-time, and against the run of play, Westella went in front for the second time as Spinks tapped home a rebound after Jamie Davies had denied Andy Coverdale.

Spinks then completed his hat-trick just after the interval in stunning fashion as he volleyed into the top corner from 30 yards.

Alex Wood made it 4-1 as he guided a header past Davies from Spinks’ cross from the right.

Unfortunately, Glapwell’s performance in the second period was nowhere near as good as the first and the scoring was rounded off by the visitors when Alex Wood’s cross was headed home by Andy Coverdale at the back post.
