Boss Winter is confident Ollerton can avoid relegation

Town sit fourth from bottom in the First Division, and although they are a handy 11 points clear of the relegation zone, one of the teams below them, Westella and Willerby, have two games in hand and the sides are due to clash on the final day of the season.

“We know we still have lots of work to do to retain our status in the league,” said Winter as his side took a break from action at the weekend. “Consistency has been our biggest problem, and it has left us at the wrong end of the table in 19th place. But I believe we have what it takes to stay up.

“We have a small squad, and we have found out the downside to that recently as we had to contend with several suspensions. But we have a great set of players, most of whom have now been with the club for a couple of seasons.”
Winter admits that the 9-0 hammering at Pontefract in January was “a very dark day for the club”, but stressed that they’ve had positive results too and performed respectably against local rivals, Teversal and Shirebrook.

“We would have liked more points on the board but, in all honesty, staying in the league was the target at the beginning of the season and that remains the target,” he added.

“I’m confident that ten points from our last ten games will see this happen. Hopefully, we will then be able to strengthen with one or two new players over the summer and then push on next season and try to get ourselves in a position where we can apply for FA Cup football.”.
